Waste from Suncoast Skips is now being diverted from landfill thanks to a newly established partnership with ResourceCo to utilise its new resource recovery facility in Hemmant, Queensland.
The new facility, opened late last year, achieves 95% landfill diversion by recycling waste from Brisbane and south east Queensland businesses and councils, with the capacity to process 250,000 tonnes of local waste each year.
Suncoast Skips Managing Director, Garry Alford, said it was ResourceCo’s ability to divert waste from landfill that prompted him to establish the relationship, which kicked off earlier this year.
“The ability to tell our customers that their waste is being diverted from landfill and used as part of a recycled product that displaces the use of fossil fuels provides us with a point of difference to our competitors,” he said.
“We are forecasting that we will be sending 13,500 tonnes of waste per annum to ResourceCo, with a lot of that being timber and cardboard from sites from Gympie all the way to Caboolture.
“The ResourceCo team have been great to work with, going as far as welcoming our staff and our customers for tours of the Hemmant facility to show how the waste is processed into an alternative fuel.”
ResourceCo Business Development Manager, Matthew Dyer, said it was exciting to be utilising the unique Hemmant facility to provide sustainable outcomes for the waste from another local business.
“We are now offering businesses across south east Queensland and northern NSW the opportunity to manage their waste in a more sustainable manner by diverting it away from landfill,” he said.
“With sustainability currently a key focus for organisations, it has been great welcoming a growing number of customers since late last year and opening their eyes to what is possible when it comes to processing their waste.”
“Every tonne of waste that we can divert from landfill removes roughly one tonne of carbon being released into the environment. On top of this, every tonne of our processed engineered fuel that is used in lieu of fossil fuel removes another tonne of carbon from the atmosphere.”
“We encourage other local businesses and councils across the region to reach out to discuss how we can assist with diverting their waste from landfill.”
